How Not To Be…Me

Not too long ago I stumbled upon a used book sale on the bottom floor of my doctor’s office. Dylan was running the halls and I chased him into a deserted room housing a bunch of cool, old books. I promise I’m not lying when I say the very first book I laid eyes on was called, How Not to Be a Messie: The Ultimate Guide for the Neatness-Challenged by Sandra Felton. I immediately got it because, well, how could I not?

I’m sitting here leafing through the book tonight and its totally cracking me up! I thought I might, from time to time, share a few of Ms. Felton’s gems. Right now I’m enjoying the “Ideas That Work” section of the appendix. Here are three of my favorite:

Switch Jobs: Mop the floor of a friend and have him/her clean your stove. Somehow it isn’t as hard to do someone else’s house.

(Excellent tip! Anyone want to come over and scrub my toilets?)

Give Yourself Rewards: Reward yourself for a job well done. Food is a good reward if you’re skinny. Even if you are not, there are some very good foods, like artichokes and crabmeat, that are real treats and not fattening.

(I already do this. I eat a can of crabmeat every time I empty the dishwasher. Totally works.)

Leftovers: Put a list of leftovers on the refrigerator door. Cross them off as they are used.

(I like this tip but wonder how to make it work for someone like me who stands in front of the fridge with a fork and steals bites out of all the Tupperware containers. Seems like this would involve a lot of editing.)

I just looked up Sandra Felton on Amazon and she appears to be a prolific writer on the topic of organization. Here’s her picture and, darn it, if she isn’t super cute! This is exactly how I wanted her to look:

I bet she writes excellent greeting card notes.

Oh gosh, I just flipped through the book some more and found handwritten notes in the margins and sections of the book underlined! I’m so excited to get a glimpse into the mind of the previous owner of this book!

(Ugh…I need a life.)

I’ll have Rox here to clean any day! She could give Felton a run for her money!

I bet Ms. Felton has a dull life. Real life is messy and interesting, like yours and mine!

Ha ha! Yeah, she seems pretty boring. I mean, the prospect of eating artichokes get her excited…
