Nature Vs. Nurture

First, an update. So far Dylan has not thrown up or shown signs of being sick, but I’m still expecting the bug to hit him. The above picture was him moments ago, very seriously playing bubbles.

Parker and Julia go to the same day care and may have been incubating the bug for a while before it made them sick. Since Dylan’s only recently been exposed to it, he may be incubating it right now. We will see. He still has an appetite, though; this was also earlier today:

He attacked that muffin!

For now, life goes on, and that means getting back to the post I started last night!

My little sister, Kelly, and I shared a small room from the time she was born until I was sixteen.

As her older sister, it’s expected that I would have an influence on her, but I actually went out of my way to brainwash her into thinking like me. Then, when I was set free into the world and realized my way of thinking makes life extra challenging, I suggested she deprogram herself and try to be as normal as possible. She went on to carve out an exceedingly normal and healthy life for herself, but sometimes I see traces of my handiwork. For example, is it nature or nurture that made her house look like this last night when I visited?

Yeah, its in rough shape, but don’t judge her too quickly! Let’s back up and consider the details…

Less than two years ago Kelly and her then fiancé, Ben, were your average, free-spirited couple on the brink of marriage.

K and B (604x453)

They both had great jobs, enjoyed summers on the lake and bought their first house, which was tastefully decorated and always spotless when I visited.

At their wedding, I was in my third trimester with Dylan and my other sister, Alana, was in her second trimester with Julia.

Dylan is now 18 months-old, so if you do the math, their wedding was less than two years ago.

(Yes, that was totally me photo-bombing their picture.)

Anyway, this is Kelly and Ben today:

Did you catch that? Yep, that’s two babies. Two babies in less than two years. They went from being newlyweds to having a full-blown family in the blink of an eye. Under the circumstances, I think they are holding up remarkably well!

So while their house now looks like this:

I think everyone would agree its really not a priority. What matters most is that their faces look like this:

They are overwhelmed, sure, but still smiling. 🙂
