When Dylan was 18-months-old I gave you guys a list of my Top 10 Educational Apps For Toddlers along with details on why I liked them, why he liked them, what they were teaching him and how you could get them. Now that he’s two he has a slew of new favorites and one in particular is so beyond awesome that I’m devoting this whole post to it!

Dylan’s grandmother has been a teacher for over thirty years and is currently a reading interventionist at the Kindergarten level. She’s the one who downloaded this app to her iPad and first shared it with Dylan. She also uses it in school to help her students learn their letters and numbers. If you read the comments on the app’s iTunes page, it’s highly used and approved by a large number of educators.

The app is called LetterSchool and its by Boreaal. You can download it here. It teaches children how to identify and write letters and numbers. What makes it unique is that its 100% intuitive. You don’t need to teach your child how to use it at all! When a user is ready to take on a new challenge, the app knows. Similarly, if a user is struggling at a certain level, the app adjusts down and gives hints until the user figures it out. Kids stay engaged despite the “learning” factor because the app is engaging, energetic and fun. (Can you tell I really like it?)

Here’s a video showing how it works:

And here’s Dylan playing it:

While the app store says LetterSchool is designed for ages 4-6, I’m finding it incredibly well-suited to my just-turned-two-years-old son. If you have a toddler, I say download it now and get a head start on those letters! I’m not a formal reviewer of things but I’m going to go ahead and declare LetterSchool The Best Preschool Learning App of 2012!

I’ll leave you with some screenshots:

This app is so cool! Thanks for sharing. I’m going to download it tonight and try it out with Ben tomorrow. The only one he plays with these days is Monkey Lunch Box, which he loves. I’ll be letting the girls in my mothers group know about this one.
