Three Nights On Tybee

Post image for Three Nights On Tybee

I hope you like pictures!

We spent a long weekend on Tybee Island and had such a great time that I’m creating this post as a digital scrapbook of our mini vacation. We were excited to go, excited to be there and didn’t want to leave, so I’ll call the trip a success.

I’m going to include details about where we stayed, along with pictures of the house, because I was incredibly impressed by it and want to share the information in case someone planning a trip to Tybee Island happens to stumble upon this post. That said, I’m almost hesitant to do so because I want to keep the secret for myself!

Saturday

We packed up the car on Saturday morning and set off on a 4.5 hour car ride to Savannah. We couldn’t check into the rental house until 3 p.m. so we planned to leave early and go to Savannah first. The drive from downtown Savannah to our place on Tybee Island ended up being less than 20 minutes. I have to say, the Savannah-Tybee combo makes for an ideal family vacation because you get a warm water beach and charming city vibe all in one pop!

But first, the car ride. We fueled up at Kroger where Jay insisted I take a picture of how much money we saved on gas using our Kroger Rewards Card.

IMG_2223 (640x480)

I told Jay it would be the sign of a lame vacation if I ended up including this picture of our gas savings (a dollar off!), but here I am doing it anyway because I’m a sucker for documenting mundanity.

IMG_2222 (640x480)

Dylan pretty much ate from the time we left our house until we got to Savannah. This eating included breakfast, which we ate on the road to save time…but it also included chips and ice cream.

IMG_2225 (640x480)

We arrived in Savannah around noon and walked around the City Market and River Street Market areas until sitting down for lunch and cold drinks sounded like a good idea. It was hot and humid, so getting cold drinks sounded good pretty quickly.

I spotted Paula Deen’s store and insisted Jay take a picture of me giving a thumbs down in front of it. Turns out the next day there was a big protest held right where I was standing.

Dylan liked listening to the outdoor musicians a lot. He also kept storming them trying to get ahold of their instruments. It was a little stressful.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.15.41 PM (640x462)

I really enjoyed walking along the river.

My dad would love the river walk part of Savannah because of the historical landmarks and all the outdoor dining. I can’t wait to go back with him and the rest of my family sometime.

We picked this restaurant by the water and sat outside where we could watch the boats and cargo ships go by.

Dylan glanced at the water a couple of times, but was much more interested in personifying the condiments on the table. He had them playing and taking naps under napkin-blankets throughout most of the meal.

We got back in the car after lunch and drove to the rental office to get keys to the house. We booked our ocean front house at Oceanfront Cottage Rentals. I cannot say enough good things about where we stayed, which was the Beach Melody property (Unit 116). It was directly on the beach, steps from the water and in a very mellow, private part of the island. I ran around and snapped a few pictures of the place before we trashed it. Winking smile

IMG_2253 (640x480)

The Beach Melody has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a fully functional kitchen with every dish, pot, pan and cooking device you could possibly need. It also has a nice washer and drier and tons of towels, beach towels and even two grills and lots of beach chairs. It was very reasonably priced too; at par with what we would have paid to stay at a decent hotel with fewer amenities (and more crowds).

IMG_2250 (640x480)

The master bedroom has a king bed and attached bathroom with a huge shower. Jay and I slept there.

IMG_2240 (640x480)

There’s a second bedroom with a king bed and attached bathroom with a tub. We used this room as a dumping ground for all our stuff and as a makeshift play room.

IMG_2243 (640x480)

The third bedroom has a queen  bed and a twin bed along with an attached half bath. Dylan slept there…like a log, I might add.

IMG_2244 (640x480)

IMG_2246 (640x480)

The things I liked most about where we stayed were its cleanliness, beach décor and endless amenities. Even the white carpets were plush and looked brand new, which I imagine is hard to achieve on a sandy beach.

IMG_2257 (640x480)

We had the ground level end unit, which had the easiest access on an off of the beach.

IMG_2251 (640x480)

Moments after we arrived, we headed out for a swim. I was surprised by how warm the water was! The waves were big too. The perfect combo.

IMG_2259 (640x480)

Jay brought his fancy camera along for the weekend and spent a lot of time taking beach pictures. I’m including some of my favorites.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 1.11.20 PM (640x423)

He was obsessed with the couple below. They sat outside each night of our trip and watched the sun set. (Or, rather, the moon rise, since the sun wasn’t setting on the side of the ocean.) The woman liked to put her arm around her man and Jay thought they were sweet. They were also joined each night by their daughter and her husband and that couple also sat in matching chairs with their arms around each other.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 1.12.00 PM (640x286)

There was a supermoon the night we arrived.

Screen Shot 2013-06-24 at 8.30.43 AM (640x419)

In case you don’t know, a supermoon is the closest approach the moon makes to earth on its orbit, and thus the largest it appears all year. If you missed it, I can confirm that it was indeed large.

Sunday

I went for a walk along the water by myself Sunday morning. If I could do that every morning, I think I would be very content.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 6.52.32 PM (431x640)

I walked to the 15th street pier and turned around.

IMG_2260 (640x480)

We all went to the beach when I got back. Jay arranged a nice shade situation.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.19.47 PM (640x466)

Dylan had so much fun at the beach. He is fearless in the water.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 1.09.53 PM (432x640)

Granted, he doesn’t know about currents, sharks and deadly things like that, so really he was just seeking some thrills.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 1.10.13 PM (470x640)

But he also didn’t care about being knocked around by the waves or having them crash over his head.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 1.11.34 PM (640x397)

We had a lot of fun watching him explore the ocean and discover all the sensations that sand and waves have to offer.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 1.08.12 PM (640x426)

These are the best days.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 1.09.36 PM (640x429)

We went in for lunch in the afternoon and then headed to the pier to browse through the shops and get ice cream.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.20.03 PM (640x636)

Dylan looked all around the gift shops and settled on one thing and one thing only: a Girls Night Out shot glass. So, that’s what he got. He likes to drink vanilla milk out of it.

IMG_2269 (640x480)

He also insisted upon an ice cream cone, which he refused to lick. He thinks it’s a bowl and eats it very slowly with a spoon while Jay and I try to manage all the melting. Its messy business. I’m not planning to offer him a cone again for a long time.

IMG_2276 (640x480)

Unless Jay is there to deal with the mess again Winking smile

IMG_2278 (640x480)

The pier was nice but didn’t offer much for kids. There was a lot of kid-friendly food, but the end of the pier caters to fisherman so when Dylan got there and wanted to splash around in the pool of water used to clean fish, we decided to leave.

More of Jay’s great photos! Check out this pelican…

And all the birds around this boat dragging for shrimp…

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 6.53.37 PM (512x640)

I love the muted, kinda icy beach colors here…

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 6.51.35 PM (640x426)

And of course, chairs in pairs.

Screen Shot 2013-06-23 at 6.54.09 PM (640x359)

This is the daughter of the couple I mentioned earlier and her husband. Her parents came out later to join them. I’m not sure why I’m including these couples so much except that Jay was really into them and since I’m keeping this digital scrapbook, I might as well include this memory for him.

Monday

Dylan was the subject of Jay’s lens after breakfast on Monday.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 6.44.42 PM (640x421)

I can take 30 pictures of Dylan and none of them are useable whereas every one that Jay takes could be a headshot.

Later that morning we took a walk along the water with Dylan in the wagon and then spent an hour or so at the beach swimming. The sun was intense so we went in around lunch time to save our skin. We read about a good restaurant called Coco’s Sunset Grille and decided to try it for lunch. While we were there we saw a sign for a Dolphin Tour and learned that a boat would be leaving soon, so we decided to make that our afternoon plan.

Snuggles at Coco’s <3

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.20.45 PM (640x477)

I bought a neon Tybee Island t-shirt at a gift shop because I wanted more coverage from the sun while we were on the boat. Jay got one too and we ended up being those lame awesome people wearing matching vacation t-shirts! I’ve often wondered how people end up doing things like this and now I know. If Dylan was 14 he would be mortified.

IMG_5945 (640x480)

Dylan was totally bored by the dolphin tour. After watching them dance, smile and splash at him from two feet away at the dolphin show at Georgia Aquarium, seeing their fins from a distance on a crowded boat fell a little flat. I also think he needed a nap.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.22.00 PM (640x469)

Bored on a boat:

Jay and I always say we shouldn’t go on group tours and then somehow we do! Anyway, I enjoyed seeing some of the local landmarks, like this lighthouse:

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.23.23 PM (640x631)

We went back to the beach in the late afternoon and Dylan had fun flying a kite.

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.24.32 PM (640x466)

We’ve tried to fly kites with Dylan before, but this was the first time it clicked and he really got the concept.

Jay grilled some meat and vegetables for dinner and then, after Dylan was asleep, we sat on the deck and watched the beach again.

Look who was out watching the sunset again…

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 6.49.37 PM (640x193)

Okay, and now for the best part. Next to swimming in the ocean and getting a dollar off my gas, this woman who materialized out of nowhere and starting doing martial arts directly in front of us for half an hour was the highlight of my weekend.

You have to check out this video. I love her.

Tuesday

Tuesday morning we packed up the car and got back on the road for home. I could’ve stayed indefinitely.

IMG_2285 (640x480)

We ate lunch midway through the trip. Dylan buttered bread. The end.

COURTNEY June 28, 2013 at 2:05 am

Yes, I can’t believe I forgot to mention the dolphins in that video. It was like she was calling them towards her because they came out of nowhere, just like she did.
