Weekend Recap: Mountain House

We had a fun and relaxing weekend thanks to our friends Savvy and Bridget who invited us to stay at a mountain house with them! Savvy’s friends own the house and he uses it often. We’ve talked about all going together for awhile now and we finally made it happen! We went from Friday to Sunday and would have stayed through Monday except Dylan is Skittle of the Week at his preschool this week and we didn’t want him to miss it! (His classroom is called “The Skittles”.). Monday he has to bring in an “All About Me” poster so he and I put this one together:

Friday

Friday morning we loaded up the car and set off for Waynesville, NC! It was about a 3.5 hour drive and we only had to make one pit stop. Dylan was anxious to get to the “mountain house”, which is how he referred to it all weekend,

The drive up the mountain was insane. The house is very much in the middle of nowhere and you have to take this narrow, twisty and steep dirt road up the mountain. I held my breath practically  the whole way up. We arrived about an hour ahead of Savvy and Bridget and got the house warmed up for them. Jay also gave me my fourth progesterone shot before they arrived. He did a good job so I think I’m just going to have him give them to me from now on rather than going into the doctor’s office.

Anyway, the house was beautiful! The inside was spacious but also very cabin-cozy and the outside porch and view from the top of the mountain was spectacular!

Jay basically unplugged the whole weekend and it was nice to see him actually relax for a change.

Bridget and Savvy came along after a bit. Their car was literally smoking after its trek up to the mountain. We unpacked groceries, Savvy and Bridget prepped dinner and we just hung out. Dylan had fun finding the various toys hidden around the house. Here’s Bridget playing something or other with him:

After Dylan went to bed the rest of us stayed up eating, hanging out and chatting.

Saturday

The sunrise on Saturday was breathtaking.

We all had coffee on the porch and Jay found this amazing ET mug!

Without an agenda, we just had a lazy morning and made a big breakfast. Dylan was very content to entertain himself with toys and hang out with the adults.

Savvy is so great with kids and Dylan just adores him, so it was a special weekend for Dylan to have Savvy all to himself.

Dylan also got to know Bridget a lot more and sought her out for cuddles in bed and rounds of Candy Crush on the iPad!

Jay surprised me by being pretty good on the piano. He doesn’t know how to play in a formal way, but when he just pitters around on it he creates nice melodies.

We had an adventure Saturday morning too! Dylan, Savvy and I went for an aimless walk down the mountain with no plan as to how we would get back. If I weren’t preggers I would love to climb it, trust me, but it was very steep and I am under orders not to over-exert. Dylan was doing great going down but eventually got tired and wanted to be held. Jay ended up calling to see where we were and we told him to catch up with us as we kept climbing down the mountain, which he did.

When it was clear we had to go back because Dylan was refusing to walk and Jay couldn’t carry him much longer, we called Bridget to come pick us all up. She ended up getting lost and stuck in mud on the way to find us so Savvy had to run up the mountain, free the car and come to get us while we tried to keep Dylan entertained in one spot in the woods for a long time. I rather enjoyed the whole ordeal but Jay was being fatalistic as usual and trying to figure out how we would survive come dark if no one came back to get us!

Jay and I made dinner on Saturday night. My contribution was this cranberry-cheddar-pecan soda bread that I got from the Joy the Baker website. It was delicious!

Dylan also took some time to relax and unwind…here he is contemplating life and letter fries:

After Dylan went to bed we hung out on the porch and played board games. I opted out of Monopoly in favor of a magazine (that game stresses me out) but I joined in on Hedbanz, which is a very low-stress and fun game.

Sunday

After a slow start and long breakfast, we packed up for home on Sunday. Dylan was a champ and kept himself entertained the whole drive home! I’m glad to know he can handle 4 hour stretches in the car because we will be traveling to Indianapolis and back soon for Thanksgiving. Its 8 hours there so we will stop in Nashville for a night each way. There is lots of driving in our future!

Dylan didn’t want to leave the mountain house, but knowing there was a new toy cement mixer waiting for him when he got home made it easier to leave. He is OBSESSED with this new toy and I think its really cool too. I discovered it on youtube by accident with Dylan one day while he was watching a video of a building being demolished. The Bruder MAN Cement Mixer is from Germany and is definitely something different then the stuff I’ve been seeing in toy stores around here these days. I will be getting a lot of Christmas toys from this company, I’m sure. I found the cement mixer on Amazon here .
