Wish I could come on here and say a bunch of cheerful and exciting things about our Labor Day weekend, but so far its been marked only by sickness. Dylan has a cough and congestion and Jason has stress-induced shingles (!). Needless to say, we haven’t done much but lay around the house trying to recuperate.
Let’s back up a bit to give this context…
I kind of knowingly exposed Dylan to a cold virus. See, he has this really good friend named Riley and we had a play date scheduled at her house. I’m friends with Riley’s mom, too, so Dylan and I both wanted to go. When Riley’s mom texted me Friday morning to say they had colds but we should come anyway, I debated what I should do but ultimately decided Dylan and I would benefit from the social interactions more than we would suffer from the colds.
I still think it was worth it.
My mom is always of the opinion that its good to exposure your immune system to germs, so maybe I’m even doing him a favor.
Although, Dylan was sick by the time we got home and I’m not even sure its possible to get sick that fast so maybe he was getting sick anyway.
Early Saturday morning, around 1 AM, Jay was enjoying this scene at an emergency room:
He discovered a painful rash on his stomach late Friday night and the doctor at the ER confirmed our suspicion that it was shingles. Shingles can pop up on anyone who has had chicken pox before but that usually only happens when you are under a lot of stress and your immune system is compromised. I had shingles in high school but I can’t remember the details too well. I can tell you that Jay is in quite a bit of pain from his. He’s trying to get more sleep and relax this weekend to hopefully speed up his recovery.
I did some cooking Saturday morning. I made meatloaf for Jay to eat later in the day and brownies for Dylan. I had to use a little algebra to adjust the meatloaf recipe. Is it weird that I derive so much pleasure from the rare instances in every day life that I need to use algebra and actually know how to do it?
Dylan has discovered the joy of licking the spatula…
Don’t worry (I know weren’t), there wasn’t a real egg in the batter. I used a chia-egg.
We ran out to a shoe store and a grocery store in the afternoon, but that’s about it. I don’t have many pictures because it was a really uneventful day.
Sunday was more of the same; just hanging around the house most of the day…
By late-afternoon I was going stir crazy so we took Dylan to Toy ‘R Us to walk around and pick out one toy. Jay and I get a lot of pleasure out of watching Dylan explore toy stores and Dylan agrees that it’s a great way to kill some time!
He looked at everything from baseball mitts and balls…
To pretty pink sports cars.
He ultimately and passionately decided on this workbench:
Its really too young for him, but he wanted it so bad we couldn’t say no. Plus, I had a coupon. He’s really into tools right now, so this just adds to his rapidly growing tool collection.
Little Dylan is still sick but he’s hanging in there.
He had a really great time in the tub anyway. Jay had him giggling the whole time.
Here’s a cute tub video:
So that’s all the news I have around here. I hope you guys are having happy and healthy weekends wherever you are!
