What I’m Good & Bad At These Days

by Courtney Sirotin on December 5, 2013

Its been awhile since I’ve given a pregnancy update, so let me fill you in on some things. It turns out I have my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to preparing for this baby.

For example, it turns out I am really good at things like eating ice cream (such an accomplishment!), worrying and making lists of things I need to buy or get done. What I’m not so good at is accomplishing things on my lists!

Some of the things I really need to get done before time’s up include: creating a room for the baby, organizing all of Dylan’s clothes so as to then prepare them for the baby (a huge benefit of having same gendered kids is that I don’t have to buy any clothes!), sorting through all of Dylan’s toys and putting away the old ones….then taking out the baby toys. Dylan’s toys have accumulated into unreasonable piles in every crevice of our house and I get paralyzed every time I imagine what its going to take to get them under control). I also need to unearth any baby gear hiding in our storage room and purchase all the stuff we still need to get, ranging from pumps to car seats and a bunch of stuff in between.

So, that’s what I need to get done but I can’t find enough time to do it! Dylan is in preschool three half days a week so that gives me about 9 hours a week to accomplish things (when I factor in the driving), but I also have to schedule all my doctors appointments, manage everyday house stuff that always needs to get done and fit in other random things during those hours so there is very little time to make a dent in my lists. We’ve also been traveling a lot and I’m going back home for awhile around Christmas so I’m just feeling overwhelmed. Remember, I told you I am really good at worrying!

I realize I’m complaining but I’m not really complaining because I’m too excited about this baby to be truly negative about anything! The little moments I do squirrel away to prepare things are extremely gratifying. I’m currently working on organizing Dylan’s clothes and ordering things for the baby’s room. Today I emptied Dylan’s closet (where I’ve been dumping the clothes he outgrows) and started sorting the clothes into different sizes. I did this in the past for his baby clothes (I still need to find all of them in storage), so today I worked on sizes 18 months through 3T. He’s in 3T-4T now so anything that still fits him will get put away neatly in his room.

I’ve been keeping his clothes downstairs in my room out of conveinence but now they are moving up into his room where they belong!

I’ve also made some decisions about the nursery. We are renting our house and can’t paint the walls (per our landlord’s request), so we are stuck with really yucky-colored walls that influence the colors I can choose for the nursery. The nursery is replacing a spare bedroom we’ve been using for random things like Jay’s closet, a bed, a desk and an exercise area. I’ve managed to remove the desk and put a glider in it’s place but everything else is still in there (including Jay’s closet) and I’ve just been dumping anything baby-related in there with the intention of organizing it “later”. That said, these pictures reflect the “before” and *hopefully* before the baby comes I’ll have some “afters” to show you!

So anyway, here are some of the things I’ve bought so far…

We aren’t getting a crib (co-sleeper here), so I got this bedding:

Here’s the print up-close. I think it will go ok with the walls. I didn’t get all the other paraphanalia in the picture above, just the comforter and shams.

I got these blackout curtains because blackout curtains are probably the single most important thing in a baby’s room (that and a sound machine):

I got this for some toy storage:

And this decal for the walls:

So, I guess there is an owl theme!

That should catch you up to speed and I hope the next time I give you a baby update my list has shrunk significantly!

Before I go, here are just a few snapshots from the last couple of days because…why not. We won’t be here for Christmas but we pulled out our old fake tree from storage just so that Dylan had something Christmasy here before we go. We are having a fake Christmas with him here this weekend so that he has a week to play with his toys from us Santa before he has to leave them to go to New Hampshire for the real Christmas. It would’ve just been too hard to lug his toys back and forth to open in New Hampshire on Christmas day, so this is our solution. I’m actually really excited because his Christmas toys are burning a hole in my closet and I want to give them to him so bad!

Talk to you soon! I’m off to work on my ice cream consumption…priorities, people!
